Make Fast Friends with Guest Blogger A.D. Blackburn

Win a copy of Possession and meet talented author A.D. Blackburn today at the Book Boost!

Here's what she had to say about making fast friends...

“Authors have giant egos.”

This is the most ridiculous statement I have EVER heard. Maybe the big name, big time bestsellers who own New York penthouses and can afford to pay for thousand dollar entrees, but the authors that I have had the pleasure to get to know over the last few months do not fit this misnomer.

As a new author, I plunged into the literary world with both feet, and more trepidation than I could shake a stick at! My first published work was included in an anthology with some newbies, true, but there was some serious talent packed into it, talent that I myself had read before.

I was a fan becoming a colleague.

You wanna talk about nervous? Yeah, I was so nervous. Of course, when I began to wade into the waters of social cues, I came to realize one very real fact...

ROMANCE AUTHORS ARE THE FRIENDLIEST PEOPLE ON EARTH!

That's right people! I said it. You ever seen the movie She Devil, where Roseanne Barr's husband leaves her for a romance novelist? She's played by none other than Meryl Streep. The character lives in a pink mansion, wears pink silk robes with ermine cuffs. Her Latin pool boy runs around shirtless and her breathy cadence is the only forgiving thing about her snarky, snappy attitude towards, well, everyone. That is what I think most people see when they envision romance writers.

Snooty, over-sexed old women with too much chocolate and not enough humanity.

I will admit some trepidation on my part, but when I opened up and acted like myself, well, I found that a great many of the gals were like me. Smart-asses with a love of great stories, hot heroes, and steamy sex. They didn't prance around in silk robes, ordering around their pool boys! They were working on manuscripts between picking up their kids, kissing their husbands and making sure that they had their work done for the day.

We share a common bond. The love of the story. Every single new found friend I have that shares my occupation is warm, and funny, and supportive! I can't tell you how many times I've had a panicked moment about a possible review or my sales and another, wiser and probably sexier fellow author has given me the pep talk I needed to calm it right on down.

As my debut hits the virtual shelves and I work on its sequel in addition to several other monstrosities, I am comforted to know that out there, in the world, even though most of us as scattered to the four corners of the earth, it is always nice to know that no matter how hard my characters are making me work or how hard it is to get the words to flow out of my cerebellum, there is always someone out there, who knows exactly how it feels to struggle with a story. My new friends know the joy, the pain, the agony and the unparalleled ecstasy of how it feels to read those four little words.

“We accept your submission.”

I would be remiss if I didn't mention that one of the dearest friendships I have forged in the last few months is with none other than the Book Boost's own, Kerri Nelson. She is, after all, my girl crush!

A Note from the Book Boost: Well, color me flattered, my sweet potato pie with whipped cream on top. xoxo I know exactly how you feel but trust me (from one of those "oldies" that has been struggling to get published and stay published for 15 some odd years--you've come a long way in a short time, baby. And that means one thing--this girl is going places. I'll be so glad to say I knew you "back when". ;-) Thanks for joining us today and just so you know...I'm picking up my copy of Possession today over at Evernight with my handy discount code (good for everyone this week on any e-book purchase! In the epic battle between Heaven and Hell, there are angels and demons…and then there’s James.

Tall, dark and deadly, James Gunn is the President of the Diabolus Venator motorcycle club, a group of one time outlaws turned gun-toting, sword-wielding, ass-kicking demon hunters. His no-holds-barred style of dispatching hell's darkest minions has earned him quite the reputation, but when he fights a low-level demon that warns him that his soul is in danger, he laughs it off…until he discovers that they mean to steal his heart to obtain it. When James realizes that a
high-ranking demon has marked him for a prime spot in hell, he pulls out all the stops to protect the one thing he loves more than his own soul— his girlfriend, Maddy.

What James doesn’t count on is that this particular demon knows a little bit more about the art of possession than the average minion and he’s forced to make the ultimate choice between the love of his life or his own soul.

Excerpt:

The door jerked open violently, James' body taking up most of the space between the door frame. Her eyes shifted and she drank him in from head to toe. Long black hair with the strange silver strands hung down passed his shoulders in thick wet ropes. The steel metal grey of his eyes bored into her. They were tired and worn. His rugged face was gaunt and thin, like he wasn’t eating or spending entirely too much time working. The angel versus demon tattoos that covered his upper arms and his chest danced as the muscles underneath twitched. And there it was, staring back at her, twisting her belly in knots. Her name, in her own handwriting, a beautiful flourish of red and black, was inked on his abdomen, right below his belly button for the entire world to see.

It was too much. She had to turn away.

“I just... I just wanted to make sure you were okay. Padre told me what happened and... I'm sorry. I shouldn't have come.” She choked on hot unshed tears. “I will just have Caius get the rest of my clothes later.”

She turned towards the club's bar room but his hand on her wrist stopped any forward motion.

“Maddy, please.” James pulled her closer towards him. “I didn't want it to be this way. I told them not to call you.”

She stared at the stitches on his forehead. The wound underneath was no longer red and angry but the thought of him being touch and go for two days without her by his side was a heartache she never wanted to live with. The levee was breaking. The tingling sensation of his skin against hers was enough to shatter the last sad remains of the barriers that she’d built. There was no sweetness left. What vestiges of the sweet simple Maddy remained were thrown by the wayside.

A fire of pure unadulterated anger was what he’d left behind in her now.

“I spent days begging you to change your mind James.” The tears behind her eyes began to trickle down her face. “You’re right. It didn't have to be this way. But you and whatever convoluted thought processes govern you, decided that this was what was best for me.” Her voice grew louder. She didn't notice that James had already pulled her into his room.

“You
made the choice. You called the shots and I have to live with it, but damn it, you can't expect me to turn off my feelings for you.”

“I didn't ask you to stop loving me, Maddy.”

She stared blankly at him for a moment. “You ass!” She smacked him in his chest and instantly regretted it as her small hand met with solid muscle. “What kind of statement is that! Of course I'm not going to stop loving you, but what the hell am I supposed to do with it? Because you’re scared I can't see you. I can't talk to you. I can't fuck you. What the hell, James.”

“Damn it woman.” He slammed the door shut and stood directly in front of her, glaring down at her. His chest was heaving, his arms shaking. “Do you see this?” He pointed at the stitches on his forehead. “You knew this was a possibility when we met. When we got together I told you what we do and you accepted all of the terms. This is the kind of shit I get into. This is what happens to us when we do what we do. You think I want you to live through this?” He stepped back and sat on the bed, sucking in slow, steadying breaths. His elbows rested on his knees as he laced his fingers through his hair.

“You don't know what they are like, what they do. I never wanted to hurt you. All I ever wanted to do was make you happy and keep you safe, but for real? We called this off just in time, Maddy.”

She cocked an eyebrow and put her hands on her hips. “What is that supposed to mean?”

“Nothing. Just... look, I love you. I know I've said it before and hell, I think I've pretty much branded by self,” he pointed towards the flourishing M-A-D-D-Y tattoo on his belly, “but I would rather love you from a distance than watch one of those bastards eat your soul.”

Maddy seethed. Every fiber of her being was lit on fire. “Let them eat it! They can take it for all I give a shit. I'd rather loose my soul than spend the rest of my life knowing that they are the reason I lost you.”

James stood, his body seething. He went from contemplative to nuclear thermal pissed in a nanosecond. “Fuck you and your dramatic Heathcliff bullshit.” With every word he stepped closer and closer towards her. “I’ve said just about all I can say. I love you. I will go to my grave loving you but I cannot risk something happening to you!”

Maddy tensed up, tilting her face upward. She glared into his eyes, the fire in her blood made her cheeks hot. “You mope and talk about sacrifices you’ve made for my well-being and I’m dramatic? Spare me your sob story pal! We were good together and you know that! You and me were something different, something that could last. You think I’m a big pussy, that I can’t take care of myself, but you don’t have to watch over me like I’m some simpering infant. And to be honest, if that’s the way you see me, then maybe you are right. Maybe this,” she pointed back and forth between herself and James who were now only a few inches apart, “this just needs to be over. So fuck you very much.”

She turned to leave, but before she could fully grasp the door knob James jerked her up off of her feet and planted the two of them firmly against the wall. He gripped her entire body against his, his iron-corded arms holding her tight against him. James stared down into her face before seizing her mouth with his. His tongue was hot and hungry. His hands cupped her ass and lifted her up. She instinctively wrapped her legs around his waist, hooking her ankles.

“Let me go,” she whispered between the angry kisses.

“Shut up,” he whispered back. He cupped her face and looked down into her eyes. “Just this one time.”

Books from the Civil War to the 21st Century with Guest Blogger Lee Ann Sontheimer Murphy

Win a copy of Wolfe’s Lady and yummy Dove chocolates today at the Book Boost with guest author Lee Ann Sontheimer Murphy!

Here's what she has to say about the progression of books throughout history...

Everywhere I go these days, online and out into the real world, I hear the ongoing debate about e-books. On one side of the issue, I see those who believe e-books are a fad, temporary successes that will be here today and gone tomorrow. Such folks naysay the growing industry of e-publishing and act as if e-books are somehow inferior to traditional books.

On the opposite side, e-books are more than just a trend but the beginning of sweeping changes that will change how we read in the future. I fall into the second category, not just because I write e-books or because I love the convenience of downloading a book at any hour of day or night for instant gratification but because I see the transition in process.

I believe that people will continue to read and I think that there will always be a place for traditional books. I also see, however, that this is just the beginning of an e-book explosion that will shift the literary world into a new direction.

Until just after the Civil War, all books were hardbound and substantial. They cost more than most average working folks could spend without breaking their budget and Andrew Carnegie had yet to build his libraries. When the earliest versions of paperback books appeared, they debuted as dime novels here in the United States and as penny dreadfuls in Great Britain.

Unlike the literary fiction of the day, dime novels featured larger-than-life characters caught in stories that we call genre fiction today; Westerns, crime, and romance.

These cheap books didn’t last long because of the low quality paper but they didn’t cost much and the reading public devoured them, then asked for more.

Dime novels and penny dreadfuls were the grandparents of the paperback novel, something we all take for granted. Before the first paperback books appeared, pulp magazines featuring Western fiction, crime stories, and romance, filled the void.

During the Great Depression, many publishing houses struggled to stay afloat since most households lacked the extra money to buy books. While library circulations soared to record levels, book sales slid and by the mid-1930’s, Penguin Books debuted as the first paperback books. Early editions featured what most considered great literature at a lesser price and when the books reached America, Simon and Schuster dubbed their version Pocket Books because they could fit into most people’s pocket.

The American Pocket Books featured brighter, bolder covers and were a hit with American service members during World War II for their portability and their low price.

Until 1950, all paperback books were reprints but that year the first paperback originals hit the bookstores and became popular. Then as now, however, some railed against them as cheap, less well written, and tawdrier than hardback originals. The reading public, however, soon embraced the books and history happened.

One of my uncles, a World War II veteran, once described to me the impact that Pocket Books had on him. It opened up new reading vistas to him with books he could carry almost anywhere that cost the same or less than a pack of cigarettes. He read voraciously for the rest of his life but I don’t know that I ever saw him with a hardback novel in hand; he always had a stack of paperbacks to read.

In early 2010, I knew little about e-books or e-readers. The first model I handled belonged to a friend and the size impressed me. So did the number of books that could be stored on the device. By the time I signed my name to my first e-book contract, I could see that the potential for this new format is limitless.

E-books are here to stay. Many major publishers including Dorchester now debut all new books in electronic format first. Just this month, the New York Times will add an e-book category to their bestseller lists as well as a combined list. This adds validation to the new format in my view and demonstrates again that we are just on the beginning edge of a major change in how we read.

Books will remain and people will read. I have no plans to dismantle my extensive collection of books, both hardbound and paperback. In time, however, I see that books will become the kind of collector’s items that vinyl albums are today. Those who appreciate the feel and smell of a traditional book will seek them out or buy special editions but the main body of the reading public will buy their books to download onto their Kindle, their Nook, their e-reader, phone, or computer.

Electronic publishing is an infant and I am eager to see just how this baby grows!

A Note from the Book Boost: What a wonderful journey through the history of book formatting, Lee Ann! Thank you so much for sharing that with us today. I loved your stories about how paperbacks were created and about your uncle's love of paperbacks. I've always been a bibliophile and no matter what the format, I always will be. After all, it is the story...the adventure...the escape from reality that we all seek. The format is such a secondary thing. Please tell us more about your book!

Stella Raines was looking for a change. She moved to the small town of Riverville to begin her first year of teaching history. She quickly learns that teaching in such a rural high school is no picnic, but the math teacher in the class down the hall makes her first week all the more intriguing…

Their attraction is instant and for eternity, like the stars under the full moon.

Excerpt:

Stella found her voice first.

“Darien, that was amazing, electric, stupendous…”

Her voice trailed off as she ran out of words to describe the
firestorm that they had just kindled and survived. With very gentle fingers, Darien cupped her face between his hands and in the softest voice she had yet heard from him, he whispered, “Darling Stella, that was magnificent. You are a woman without equal, my star.”

They cuddled in easy silence until he stirred.

“Don’t go.”

“I must, Stella-star,” Darien said, “Don’t worry. We have a
connection now, one I cannot deny.”

Her few sexual experiences had been nothing compared to that
feast of uninhibited passion and Stella, sated and filled with an inner joy she had never known, whispered the words that had been embroidered across her heart.

“Darien, I love you.”

Darien, in the act of pulling on his now buttonless shirt,
stopped as if she had shot an arrow through his chest. He stiffened and she saw it, wishing now she could take back the sweet words, suddenly thinking that this had been nothing more than good sex to him.

“Stella,” he said her name with such sadness that she wanted
to weep. She steeled herself. This would be the part where he would say that she was beautiful, wonderful, but that he could not get involved.

He would say that he was not ready for a commitment and
that they could still be friends. If anything kindled between them, well, they might enjoy friendly sex. Her love life during her college years lacked stability and after several abrupt break-ups, she had all but given up on romance.

Until now, every time she offered a man her
heart, he had stomped it into a thousand broken pieces. Stella had heard it all the exit lines before and she turned her face away from him so he would not see the tears that formed, then dropped like tiny diamonds onto her bare shoulder.

“Yes?”

“You are my lady, and I love you. Yet, Stella, there are things
about me that I am afraid to tell you. Will you be patient with me, dear star of my heart?

Know It All with Guest Blogger Sherry Gloag

Meet author Sherry Gloag today at the Book Boost!

She's here to discuss “What do you think you know?” about the publishing industry.

Here's what she had to say...

Why does that inner voice nag when an author sits down to work?
Aspiring authors and readers often assume the more experienced the writer, the more assured they become. And of course in many ways this is true.

Authors who write for more than one publisher meet and work with different editors. Each editor has their own preferences and angles, as does the publisher the editors and author are working for.

And within that publisher’s remit the author may cover several different sub-genres that all have their own perspective on how the they must approach their subject. So over time authors learn to adjust their writing style to suit both the publisher they are targeting and the requests of their editors.

From a reader’s perspective this may sound simple, but believe me, even for the most experienced and adaptable writer it can present problems.

The author sets out to write a book that will catch their readers’ interest and bring them back again and again. Author’s aim to write, to maintain and improve the quality of writing, the story content, to create more rounded and believable characters. Their books are not just stories, they are also an advertising campaign. The quality of the first chapter will entice the new reader to keep turning the pages, while final chapter of the current book must entice those same readers to buy the author’s next book, and the one after that, and… Well you get my drift.

The publisher sets out to contract authors who will provide a quality product. – I use the word product advisedly here. – It may still be ‘a story/book/novel’ but to the publisher it is also a product, one among many, all competing for acceptance, all competing for a growing reader following. To do this the publisher, at some point, will take risks on new authors. They are looking for writers who not only offer a quality product/book, but ones they think will offer quality manuscripts on a regular basis. After all a publishers target, like the authors’, is to sell books and gather a robust reader following.

To do this they, like the author need to provide a quality product their readers will buy and keep coming back to them for more. Unlike the author, the publisher must do this over various genres and various ‘products’/book/authors. They have several ‘balls’ in the air at the same time, and if they drop one they must have an immediate replacement handy to keep the steady flow of production going without interruption.

And what of the editor? ‘The jam between the slices of bread’ you could say.

Like most artists, writers become so involved with their work it doesn’t matter how carefully they revise, self-edit and check yet again, errors slip through. It doesn’t matter how long the author leaves their work alone to give them space and a new perspective on their writing, their characters, their plot and their story, their brain and their eyes will still ‘float’ over some errors. They will ‘see’ what they intended to write, not what is on the page.

It may be a comma in the wrong place, a spelling error their spell-checker missed and they overlooked. But those errors will be there. And it is the editor’s job not only to spot and highlight these, but to point out the areas where writer-style and ‘in-house’ publishing style may not coincide. Writer and editor have to work to readjust the writing without compromising the story to accommodate their publisher’s house-style.

Add a deadline to the mix and suddenly there is a high-level stress factor involved, and up pops that nasty little voice saying, “What do you know?” Or worse, “Do you really think you can do all this in time?”

Having done it once, readers may be forgiven for assuming next time will be easier for the author, and in some ways it is. The author knows, to a degree, what they may expect. But the industry is constantly changing, advancing, shifting. For the modern-day author simply writing is no longer enough. They have to cope with their own promotion, which includes all things online from web and blog site creation to visiting hundreds of new sites tot tote their book. Virtual and ‘real’ book signings, most of those can be great fun, and so much more.

But seriously, there is so much that every author must address that once upon a time came under the publishers’ jurisdiction, is it any wonder that every so often that pesky little gremlin gets the chance to pipe up and ask, “What do you think you know?”

A Note from the Book Boost: Very well said, Sherry. You have really hit the nail on the head here with all the different sides of publishing. And after you get published, the work has only just begun! Thanks for joining us today. Please tell us more about your newest release.

She’d saved his life…

Rafe Hawk refuses to accept the inheritance, of a large English estate, and the title that goes with it, after his birth father’s death because the man chose duty over the woman he loved and their son.

So when he finds himself temporarily living at Kinsale Hall, he’s not prepared to trust anyone associated with the place, including Trudi Delaney and her daughter.

So why, when he looks into their eyes, does he suddenly remember a woman who may have lost her life after a storm while saving his over a decade ago?

Now he could destroy hers.

Instinct warns Trudi Delaney the arrival of the contemptuous American architect at Kinsale Hall will change her life forever. Especially when she discovers he spends so much of his time in areas of Kinsale Hall off-limits to visitors.

Eleven years after escaping from her psychotic husband with a stranger, she’s still plagued by nightmares of events she can’t remember. Events such as, who fathered her beautiful daughter?
Now more than a decade later, she is confronted by another stranger. Will this one destroy everything she holds dear?

Excerpt:

“Stop the car!” Rafe Hawk swung round to face the driver. “I recognise this road. You never said the commission to build those retirement units was at Kinsale Hall. You know damn well I swore never set foot in the place again, eleven years ago.”

Rage hazed his vision. “You knew I’d refuse the commission if you’d revealed the location, and because you withheld that vital information, Arthur, this contract is null and void.” He shot forward in his seat when Arthur tramped on the brakes.

His friend from their Uni days skewed round in his seat. “How long have we known each other?”

Startled by Arthur Clifton’s question, Rafe hesitated. “What’s the length of our friendship got to do with anything? Other than the fact you’re stretching it very thin, if you think I’ll set foot on Kinsale territory again.” He swung open the car door and leaped out, his fingers tunnelling through his windswept hair.

Brilliant blue skies overhead offered a large playground for the early summer sunshine, and the fluffy white clouds sailing by. He saw the high chimney-tops through the trees.

“Do you really think I’d bring you here without a very good reason?” Arthur remained in his seat, his hands on the steering wheel, watching Rafe pace up and down the soft verge beside the open-topped car.

"I can't think of a single reason good enough that justifies you resurrecting events that nearly cost me my life, and possibly cost the life on an unknown woman."

Self Publishing Strategies with Guest Blogger Kris Tualla

Win a copy of A Woman of Choice and welcome historical author Kris Tualla to the Book Boost today!

She's here to discuss...why self publishing is usually a mistake. Here's what she had to say...

We've all seen them. The authors who sat alone in their rooms and wrote a book that no one ever saw. Or that their mother/husband/best friend saw and praised, even though they don't read the author's genre and the manuscript still needed a ton of work.

Then they Googled "self-publishing" and went to a vanity press, where they were charged thousands of dollars to get their book into print (no e-outlets). But no additional editing or proofing was included in that fee. Their book was listed on Amazon (only) and priced at twice the industry standard.

Even so, they'll never make back what they spent. And anyone who buys the first book won't buy a second one. If the author ever writes a second one.

Can you pick out the mistakes these authors made?
• They wrote alone.
• They didn't get feedback.
• They weren't edited nor their manuscripts proofed.
• They paid mucho money for their substandard, overpriced products.
• In short - they were sadly ignorant of "what it takes."

It doesn't have to be this way! An author who is willing to do the work has the potential to be successfully indie-pubbed.

I know - I'm doing it. But the path needs to begin on a traditional track. Here are the steps to high quality independent publishing:

1. Join Legitimate Writer's Groups. Ones with traditionally published authors. Learn HOW to write from them.

2. Find Beta Readers: authors & readers who read your first drafts and give feedback on the plot, characters, GMC, pacing, believability, etc. of your story. Then follow their suggestions.

3. Once the manuscript is finely polished, submit to traditional editors and agents.

4. If you're rejected, pay attention to WHY. Is it the writing itself? Or is the writing fine, but other factors are at play?

Now it's decision time. When I was being rejected because: “We don’t do American historicals… no one can sell Scandinavia…write Scotland BUT Scotland is a very crowded market… cut 15,000 words then I’ll look at it… publishers LIKE their boxes…”

I knew it was time to strike out on my own.

So with my agent's blessing (Yes - I snagged an agent AND several full requests from major houses. …Still waiting.) I took my American-Norwegian historical romance trilogy to e-publishing and print on demand (POD). And I did all the work myself.

Here's what that work entailed:

5. For the POD (print on demand) copies I used CreateSpace by Amazon because there is no contract, no fees, no required purchases, and fabulous distribution. I designed my own covers, but there are other options.

6. I ordered completed books and gave them to 3 or 4 readers to be edited and proofed. This costs no more money (about $5 for a 100,000-word book) than printing manuscripts at Kinko’s and is so much more productive!

7. I go through 4 rounds of printed-book edits until 12 different sets of eyes have picked the books apart.

8. When I’m done, I publish paperbacks on Amazon and B&N via CreateSpace.

9. I upload my e-books to Kindle, Nook, Kobo, Sony and Smashwords.

10. I begin to promote like nobody's business!

I did submit the 3rd book in the trilogy to RT Book Reviews. They said: "A riveting novel showing that dirty politics have been around for a long time. The story is quite emotional with plenty of action. Nicolas and Sydney may have serious problems, but they also share a deep love and lots of laughter!"

And they gave me 4 STARS. Not bad for a debuting and indie-pubbed author.

But I did the work over four years. I got feedback. I learned. I locked my ego in a cabinet with a big chunk of chocolate and I put myself and my manuscripts out there. I never worked in a vacuum.

A Note from the Book Boost: Thank you for taking us on your journey through the self publishing world. You still somehow make it look so easy--even though I see your strategy for success is anything but easy. Good for you for doing all the hard work and I hope you reap the benefits for years to come! Please give us a run down on your books.

Go Agent Shopping with Guest Blogger Candi Wall

Welcome author Candi Wall to the Book Boost!

She's here to tell you all about the wonderful Agent Shop program she hosts over a Muse Tracks.

Here's what she had to say...

Thanks for having me Kerri!

‘Agent Shop’ at MuseTracks

What’s ‘Agent Shop’ you ask?

How many of us wish we could pitch to an agent? That is, without the frills? No parties, no travel, no conference costs, no hectic schedules? Don’t get me wrong, the conferences, promos, signings and parties have their place and time, but what about in between?

Here’s what we’re going to do.

This isn’t a contest… there aren’t any winners… just a chance to put your pitch in front of agent(s) who are interested in shopping a bit. They’ll read them and request more - IF – your pitch grabs their attention. What they request is up to them. We do not guarantee anything.

From time to time, we will hold contests. These could include anything from promotional contests for the MuseTracks writers to just for fun. Placement contests will happen from time to time as well.

It’s that simple – well maybe. I’m sure you’re wondering…

‘What’s the catch’?

Agent Shop will only be ‘open’ one day, per month, and I’m only taking the first thirty pitches that I receive. But don’t worry, if you don’t get in the top thirty this time, you can try again the next month. Hopefully, enough great pitches come in to keep these agents coming back for more.

After the pitches go up, the agent(s) have one week to read and decide. They will then contact me and I will forward on information to the author(s) who received requests. I will also be posting results after the week is up. Just the total number of requests made – no specifics or names.

Here are the rules:

Pitches accepted in: Romance – All genres, subgenres, elements, Women’s fiction and YA. (At this time we are not offering any other areas of writing, but you can always check back. If more agents become interested – we might expand.)

Agent(s) attending will be posted approx one week before the start day.

I’ll post the word “GO”on the HOME PAGE of the blog the day you can send your pitches in. Do not send until you see the word “GO” – if you do, I’ll delete your e-mail – no questions. I’ll put up the date and time as well shortly before starting, just as a reminder. The first date will be May 30th, 2009 at 10:00am EST.

Once the word “GO” is up, you are welcome to send your pitch to Candi_Agent_Shop@yahoo.com (Please note that is Candi_Agent_Shop. Don’t forget the underscores or you won’t get through.)

I’ll post the word “STOP” when I’ve received thirty pitches. Any e-mails after that will be deleted without being read. (If I do not post STOP for any reason – computer issues, family issues, because I’m having a numb moment, the session will still close the following morning. This is when I sit down for the day and do the weeding.)

If your pitch is one of the first thirty to reach my inbox, you’ll see it posted the next day, on the main page of the Musetracks blog, for the shopping agent(s) to peruse.

(1) Only one pitch per e-mail. (You can pitch as many times as you’d like but each one MUST be in its own e-mail.)

(2) Please put “Pitch – Agent Shop” in the subject line of your e-mail. (If you need information or have questions, please put INFO in your subject line.)

(3) YOU MUST INCLUDE - Your name, contact e-mail, genre/subgenre, title and word count (of your ms) in your e-mail BEFORE the pitch. ALL INFO SHOULD BE PASTED INTO THE E-MAIL. NO ATTACHMENTS WILL BE OPENED. Only the pitch, genre, title and word count will be posted on the blog, but I need a way to contact you if an agent chooses your pitch. If you do not include all of the requested information – you guessed it, delete. I love my delete button, so don’t give me a reason to use it more than I already do.

LIKE THIS:

TITLE

GENRE

WORDCOUNT

PITCH

Placing your info anywhere in your pitch does not mean you’ve given me th einformation. I don’t have time to read through and figure out your info! Auto delete if I do!

(4) The pitch must be 200 words or less. No exceptions. Word count WILL be verified before your pitch is accepted.

I won’t contact people if they do not adhere to these rules, so check, check, and double check before you hit send. Can you here my ruler striking the desk? But seriously, this is a great opprotunity to get in front of an agent, so most important of all – polish that pitch until it shines!

So there it is. Get those pitches sharpened and ready to go on the Agent Shop shelves.

I’d love to contact you and tell you your pitch is in a basket and on its way to the check-out.

Hope to see you there!

Excerpt
:

As he measured her, his gaze warmed the consuming chill that had invaded her body. She glanced down, holding the material out. Nothing she could ever afford. Standing next to him in his stunning black suit, gave her more confidence than if she wore plain clothing.

“I wouldn’t have picked it out for myself, but you have good taste.”

“I know.” Trace’s gaze traveled down her torso, to her exposed toes and slowly up to her face.

“And you take my breath away.” He kissed the inside of her wrist.

Heat shot up her inner arm overpowering any nervousness she may have felt earlier. She leaned into him and whispered, “You breathe?”

Trace half smiled. “Sometimes.”

She blinked. “Oh.” That meant sometimes he didn’t breathe either.

Trace stiffened, then glanced toward the entrance flanked with four massive columns. It took a moment before she heard footsteps in the foyer. Five men entered the parlor. All dressed similar to Trace, except their cold penetrating eyes made her worry. Scared was more like it.

One man strode toward her, eyes narrowed, mouth pulled down in a frown. She swallowed, then took a deep breath and squared her shoulders. They will not get to me. I will be strong.

“He won’t hurt you. Will you, Dev?” Trace stepped forward and crossed his arms.

Dev smirked and stared through his long dark lashes. “Depends.”

An eerie rumble vibrated the room. Kira advanced toward Trace. The sound of a wild cat drifted in the air. She tilted her head, glanced at Trace and realized the noise came from him.

“Boys. Boys. Boys. Dev won’t touch her, but I might.” A slender brunette appeared out of thin air and stood directly in front of the other men. Oh hell.

Want More Dawn?

Author Bio:

Dawn was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, one of four children. She’s a southern girl, but has the accent of a New Yorker, or so she’s been told. The “unknown” and the “power of love” fascinate her. She grew up in her parent’s bookstore, but at the time she didn’t like to read. (Really!) It took a divorce (and a book-a-holic sister) for her to find the passion for reading, and a hurricane named Katrina to uncover her desire to write. After writing four manuscripts, Not An Angel, her paranormal romance found a home with The Wild Rose Press.
