Day 18: Read1K Write1K Challenge Grows a Spine

Ready to Throw the Book at it?
Don't Quit on Day 18

"Writing a novel is like driving a car at night. You can only see as far as your headlights, but you can make the whole trip that way."--E. L. Doctorow
***UPDATED***

What I'm writing?

Book: The Cable
Starting Point: Page 101
Today's total word count: 319

What I'm reading?

Book:  Hot Wheels and High Heels by Jane Graves
Starting Point: Beginning
2 Chapters Completed:No
Today's Book Note:N/A

Kerri's Progress Notes:

Back at it today.  Had to finally give in and buy a new computer after a painstaking search.  Wanted to upgrade, but had to stick with the same specs I currently have due to finances.

I really hate switching computers and I'm dreading Windows 8.  Anyone else have it?  Any tips or horror stories to share?

My old computer is hanging on by a thread.  I've had to replace the battery, the power cord, and the DVD drive is shot.  Not to mention that thing it is currently doing where it locks up or crashes on me about 4 times a day (big issue for a writer/editor).

I've consulted the professionals and they've all agreed--I burn out computers faster than the average user.  Could be that thing where I have my computer up and running about 16-18 hours (sometimes more) a day.  You think?

Poor processor.

Will let you know how the transition goes...

Day 18:
What I'm writing?
Today's total word count: 1,223 Yahoo!!! Love, love, love it.

What I'm reading?
Chapters Completed: ch. 19

Earring update: So, today, in swimming/gym class, one of the twins (the one who lost her stud and was wearing my extra stud as a temporary replacement) managed to lose the back of my stud. The other twin thought she’d found it, and they put it on the back of the stud. Turns out, it was just a normal earring back. Seriously? Twice? Luckily, the earring itself stayed in her ear this time.

So sorry to hear about your computer woes, Kerri. It always takes me days to get back on track with new technology even if I manage to backup everything ahead of time.

What I'm writing?
Book: The Cabinet of the Dead
Today's total word count: 1081
Progress Notes: Ah ha! I found a modern machine that does what my steampunk inventor has created. So he invented it a couple hundred years early--it's science fiction, right?

What I'm reading?
Book: Across the East River Bridge by Kate McMurray
1K Completed: Yes!
Book Note: Enter the sexy professor.

Also read a really interesting article about writing today that said when you're writing a story, you are the villain and the main character is the hero. The real conflict that readers love to read is the one behind the scenes--the struggle between the storyteller and their own fictional characters. As a writer you're the one thwarting the hero at every turn until you give up and let them win. :)

Sorry to hear about the computer problems.

What I'm writing

Assassin's Soul
Words 174 new - Edits of Prologue

I would have added more but my tablet ran out of power 1/4 through my oldest's baseball game. :(

What I'm reading

Whiskey-Pissing Unicorns: How to Lose or Quit Your Job and Become a Badass Writer by Sonja Foust and Lisa Creech Bledsoe

Currently free on Amazon. Coauthored by a friend. It's a quick read for me. Less than 2 hours to read the whole thing.

@Lynnette~

Word Count Is Va Va Va Voom! That is one tricky earlobe! Fingers crossed for your girlie.

@Aidee~

I hate Windows 8! So much so that after two hours with it I felt tears coming on. Of course, it could be hormonal. Will tell you more about it in my Day 19 notes. You won't believe what happened. Your writing is top notch, as usual. And sexy professor? Hello! That article sounds amazing, send me a copy please?

@Beth~

Well, your reading material sounds like a winner because of the title if nothing else. LOL Do you mean that you write on your tablet? How do you manage that? I've tried a couple tablets and don't think I could manage it. Do you have a keyboard for it?

O words yesterday. I taught for 4 hours then went to my mom's and put her porch furniture together for her. It took me 4 hours to put together a chair, rocking chair, table, and a glidder. I was dead by the time I got home. But I did get the last read through done on my book done. And it will go to the formatter tomorrow morning.

Couple of days late again :(

Wednesday+Friday, wrote over 3K together (mostly the vampire story), and caught up on reading (still Janet Evanovich).

Book notes: I have trouble relating to the main character. That's on me, not the author--I like my mystery with a touch of comic relief, but not that much chick-lit/comedy mixed in. Almost done though.

Progress: See you later with today's count--I hope.

Oh my! I spend a large portion of my life putting together children's toys. Well, that and trying to get them out of the actual box that they've been glue, tied, stapled, and rubberbanded into. It was nice of you to do that for your Mom!

@Barbara~

Thanks for checking in. Glad to know you're keeping up with the writing. Sounds great!

@Cynthia~

FEEL BETTER! :-)
